Majestic Connemara Ponies

Connemara Ponies

The Connemara pony is the only breed of horses native to Ireland, hailing from the rugged Connemara region on the wild Atlantic way in Galway. Known in Irish as the Capaillín Chonamara, it is a breed renowned for its versatility, hardiness, and gentle disposition. Historically, these ponies have evolved through a mix of foreign breeding, the origins of which are mainly from Scandinavia and Spain.

In 795 AD, an earlier version of the breed was among the many aspects the Vikings brought with them to Ireland, but it wasn’t until the Spanish Armada ran aground in 1588 that the Connemara pony emerged. The Spanish Andalusian horses were set free and began to breed with the wild Scandinavian ponies in the Connemara mountains. The new breed was born, bringing with it some of the best qualities of the parent stock. Over time, they adapted to the rugged and harsh Connemara terrain, creating a robust and sure-footed breed.

Connemara ponies typically stand between 12.2 and 14.2 hands high, with a well-defined head, strong neck, and sturdy limbs. Their intelligent eyes and short, neat ears contribute to their distinctive appearance. Known for their friendly, gentle nature and willing temperament, Connemara’s excel in various disciplines, including show jumping, dressage, and eventing. Their athleticism and agility make them popular choices for riders of all levels. Historically, the ponies were the foundation of West of Ireland family small holdings, where the ponies were the backbone in many aspects of the family farm. Right up until the 60’s and 70’s, these ponies were used in ploughing the land, carrying home the turf and hauling seaweed to use as organic fertilizer on the land. They also ferried the family to and from the local town, as well as of course, to Mass on Sundays.

These ponies are also valued for their contribution to the equestrian world as children's mounts, thanks to their manageable size and reliable character. Despite their relatively small stature, Connemara ponies exhibit great strength, making them suitable for both leisure riding and competitive sports. Amid fears that the bloodlines were in danger of being diluted by other breeds, The Connemara Pony Breeders Society, was founded in Clifden in 1923. The Society aimed to protect and further develop the breed, publishing the Connemara Pony Stud Book in 1926, thereby making the breed official. Connemara ponies are now bred internationally, but only through small boutique breeders.

Up to about 20 years ago, it was a common sight to see between one and four Connemara ponies in many of the fields across County Galway, but all that has changed in recent years as the value of these prized horses has increased. A 3 year old Connemara fetched €14,000 just last year, making their security from roaming horse thieves, a definite priority. So out of sight – out of mind.
