The traditional Irish cottage food photographs that are displayed in our gallery, relate to an ‘Ireland’ of times gone by. In the 40’s and up to the mid-60’s, economically, rural Ireland was in a very dark place. Human survival was challenging, especially on remote small holdings, with people barely scraping by on a meagre living from a few acres of poor, damp and craggy land.
The open turf fire in the kitchen/living area in the center of the cottage, was as they say, ‘the heart and soul of the home’ by providing heat for both heating the house and to cook the family food. All the foods were cooked in a cast iron skillet or a larger pot belly boiling pot, hanging from a fire bar over the burning turf.
So, it is easy to appreciate the skill of the women of the house to produce a nourishing, wholesome range of traditional Irish cottage food. 90 percent of all this food was home- grown, foraged and hunted on the land. A range of vegetables were grown – some animals were reared for milk and meat, poultry for eggs and meat, as well as fish and game. A variety of wild berries and fruit, with some herbs, were foraged, all contributing to the final meal and to the skills and experience of the cook in preparing recipes that were learned and handed down through generations.
All of the elements above played a part in producing the magic that is traditional Irish cottage food. Our photo wall art images are exclusive and for sale on our website. The fine art photographs are perfect for home kitchens, bars, restaurants, hotels and all commercial spaces, to remind of times gone by.
