Meet Mark Redmond – Master Piper and the future of Irish traditional music, both at home and internationally! (as the Danes would say – ‘Probably’).
Mark Redmond is a young, Gorey Co.Wexford, artist, that I had the pleasure of playing a few traditional tunes with, many years ago, when he was just a lad. I have watched him grow and develop into one of the finest young Uilleann pipers of modern times
Mark holds a B.A. Degree in music and a Masters Degree in music with a specialty strand in traditional music. He is a PhD in music (his research & thesis is on the integration of the Uilleann Pipes into the orchestra and orchestral arrangements). This is a subject that he has extensive experience in, as he has appeared with the RTE Symphony Orchestra on numerous state occasions, and the RTE Concert Orchestra many times. Mark has performed for President Higgins and his International guests at Aras an Uachtarain a number of times. He performed for the late Queen Elizabeth II and met with the late Prince Philip. He toured with Riverdance for two years, and currently tours internationally twice a year with ‘The Irish Memory Orchestra’, performing a contemporary fusion with traditional elements.
Mark Redmond teaches Uilleann pipes each year at the ‘Willie Clancy Summer School’ and also at Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann. So far, this young Artist/Musician has toured Australia, North & South America, Canada, China, Japan, Korea, Egypt, Dubai, and performed in most capital cities in Europe.
At the funeral of the late Liam O’Flynn (one of the best known pipers in the world), Mark was chosen to play a solo piece during the televised ceremony, an honour probably closer to Mark’s heart, than any other performance in his life.
As fine art Portraits are generally about life’s achievements (and Mark has so many accolades already), so it was a bit of a tall order to create a portrait to encapsulate all of this artist's talent, so you may judge the results for yourself right here. Lots more portraits, of well known musicians, are featured in the Irish Photo Art Gallery - 'Dancing Fingers'.
I look forward to following the future successes of Mark Redmond and I think that the art of Uilleann Piping and its future international appreciation and development, is in very safe hands.
